We love Bees! Pollinators are the unsung heroes of the food chain. At Vapour, we’ve consciously chosen to formulate with beeswax which supports bee health and habitat. We recently discovered Beekeeper’s Naturals, a like-minded “Bee positive” brand. We’ve revamped our medicine cabinet with their healthy alternatives to conventional remedies—products that are totally in line with our values and really work. Learn more about Beekeeper’s clean and effective products here.
We talked with Carly Stein, founder of Beekeeper’s to ask her what inspires the brand and her personally.
Carly Stein, founder of Beekeepers Naturals
What inspired you to create Beekeeper’s Naturals?
BKN didn’t start as an idea for a company. It started as a solution to my health issues.
After years of struggling with chronic tonsillitis and autoimmune issues, but being unable to tolerate traditional antibiotics, I discovered bee propolis. For the first time in my life, I started feeling better. It was so life-changing that I felt compelled to share it with as many people as possible.
Throughout my journey, I experienced firsthand how limited the medicine cabinet is. Most remedies are full of refined sugars, nasty chemicals that come with side effects and synthetic ingredients that don’t actually support healing. I knew I wanted to create cleaner, science-based solutions for people like me; people who want to feel better but don’t feel comfortable taking products full of dirty ingredients.
What’s your clean product philosophy? Why should we care about what’s inside our medicine cabinets?
You deserve to feel better without being forced to sacrifice your values. There is no reason, with all the advancements in modern science, that our only options for “healing” have to be tainted with toxins and nasty chemicals.
At BKN, our remedies exist in the space where science meets nature. We utilize the most powerful, sustainably sourced ingredients that our planet has to offer. But we are also committed to working with a team of chemists and medical professionals to ensure our formulas work as well as anything you’d find in your local pharmacy. It’s the best of both worlds.
What’s your go-to Vapour product and BKN product—and why?
For me, it’s all about our Propolis Spray. I struggled with a weak immune system throughout my life. It was only when I started using propolis that I stopped getting sick. Propolis can be thought of as the immune system of the hive. The bees make this sticky stuff out of plant and tree resins and use it to keep germs out of their home. For humans, it functions in a similar way—helping us to support our immune health, reduce inflammation, boost our natural defenses and recover faster! I take Propolis Spray every day for immune support by spraying 4 sprays each morning. I’ll also double up in the afternoon if I feel run down or need an extra boost.
I tend to be fairly minimalist with my makeup, but I almost always put on a swipe of Vapour’s Mesmerize Mascara before I leave the house. It’s my perfect mascara—really long lasting and doesn’t smudge like other natural mascaras I’ve tried. I am really picky about what makes it on my face, so I especially love that this mascara is made without nasty ingredients like petroleum and formaldehyde. Plus, the first ingredient on the label comes from the hive (beeswax)!
Why do you believe it is important to support female-founded businesses?
There have been some amazing female-led companies stepping into the public eye over the past few years, but females in CEO and executive level positions still largely remain underrepresented. Only 7.4% of CEOs of Fortune 500 companies are female! I think it’s so crucial that we support women in business. Unique points of view coming from members of different demographics allow for more diverse thinking and ultimately lead to more unique ideas and innovations. Those are things we can all benefit from—we need more women in charge!
What’s one piece of advice you wish you could share with all women?
We really do create our own realities, so fall in love with yourself. Be your biggest fan. That doesn’t mean you need to develop a massive ego—it just means be kind and loving to yourself. The internal dialogue you have with yourself dictates how you show up in the world. If you want to show up as the best version of you (and kick ass), then you have to fully embrace and be in love with who you are.
What’s your personal mantra/philosophy/outlook?
I’m a big fan of vulnerability. I try to let that shape the way I show up as a leader, as well as in my personal life. I believe that there is nothing more courageous than being vulnerable. When you open yourself up, it sets a tone that allows for more authentic connections and for people to feel safer being themselves. When people feel safe to do their thing, magic happens.
